What is an eSIM? How eSIM technology works
An eSIM is a SIM card built into your phone as a chip. Instead of inserting plastic, you scan a QR code to download a mobile plan. Travellers use eSIMs to get local data abroad without roaming fees or buying a SIM card on arrival.
Key facts
- Works on most unlocked phones from 2018 onwards
- Installed by scanning a QR code over Wi-Fi
- Your regular SIM and number stay active
- Plan validity starts when you first connect at your destination
How a travel eSIM works
You buy a data plan online, receive a QR code by email, and scan it in your phone's settings. The eSIM appears as a second line. When you land, you switch mobile data to the eSIM and connect to a local partner network.
eSIM vs physical SIM
- No shop visit or passport registration at the airport
- No tiny SIM tray to lose
- Keep your home number active for calls and texts
- Buy and install before you leave home
